York accountant presented with top award
York accountancy student Stephen Ashcroft has recently been presented with a certificate by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) with his York-based employer, Norwich Union Life, which sponsored him throughout his studies in December 2007.
Stephen, of Bootham, York, was first out of more than 19,000 students worldwide who entered to sit exams as part of their professional accountancy qualification in December 2007. He obtained ACCA’s gold medal for papers P1-P7. He was also awarded ACCA’s silver medal for achieving the second highest aggregate mark in the world of students who passed all their final exams.
The Oxford University graduate says: “I certainly did not expect to be so successful when I started out. I never aimed for prize-winning marks.”
Norwich Union Life provided Steve with an excellent study package. Stephen says: “As well as paid tuition, exams and time off for study they have also supported me in gaining the relevant practical experience required for membership of ACCA. The people and atmosphere are great. In addition, Norwich Union Life is such a large and diverse company that I have lots of opportunity for career development.”

Notes to Editors
1. ACCA is the global body for professional accountants. We aim to offer business-relevant, first-choice qualifications to people of application, ability and ambition around the world who seek a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and management. We have 325,606 students and 122,426 members in 170 countries worldwide.
2. ACCA believes that globalisation of business requires one set of reporting standards. We favour principles-based, not rules-based standards, which is why we support the worldwide implementation of IFRS.
3. ACCA believes that tax systems should be transparent, simplified, fair and certain.
4. Complying with regulations affects SMEs disproportionately, which is why ACCA urges governments and standard setters to ‘think small first'’
